Vox Machina Team Talk Taryon Darrington and New Monsters

Vox Machina Team Talk Taryon Darrington and New Monsters

The Legend of Vox Machina Season 4 just premiered this week on Prime, and two key members of the creative team, Sung Jin Ahn (Co-Executive Producer) and Arthur Loftis (Art Director) were on hand at IGN Live today to talk about some of the season’s big new additions and to tease what’s to come.

Season 4 of the series has brought in a character many Critical Role fans will be familiar with, Taryon Darrington. Said Loftis, “As a fan of the original campaign, I was very exited to finally see Taryon on screen, as I’m sure other fans are.” Ahn and Loftis had high praise for The Legend of Vox Machina’s Lead Character Designer, Phil Bourassa, noting, “He probably did a million variations on how pompous Taryon needed to look.”

There’s also Taryon’s robot companion, Doty, with Loftis saying Bourassa “managed to make them feel like this perfect pair,” adding, “The only thing that would be good enough to follow Tary around is another Tary .” There’s also Taryon’s vehicle, called the Taryvan, naturally – a horse drawn carriage that is notably ornate, just how Tary likes it. As Loftis joked, Tary fills a role unlike another other on the show as “a rich jackass.”

We’ll also meet Taryon’s father Howaardt this season, who very much is responsible who his son has become. Loftis said Bourassa really let loose on this design, giving Howaardt “Almost One Piece proportions, and that really helped sell his huge personality.” Ahn said that though Howaardt does have a stricter side, they wanted to make sure you could still see the influence on his son.

We were shown the animatic version of a Season 4 scene in which Howaardt shows off the Deck of Infinite Possibilities, something we’re told has incredible power -“Drawing a card is the ultimate game off roulette dangerous enough to damn your soul or save it” Says Howaardt, “A poker buddy of mine drew a card on a dare and ‘Poof,’ never seen again!”

Regarding the early animatics, Ahn said they were always incredibly helpful as far as showing everyone the direction they are going for the final animation of each episode.

As for the Deck of Infinite Possibilities, some fans will recall those are tied to Grog’s lore, and Loftis said they always look for places they can put in these nods, whether overt or as Easter eggs.

New looks were shown at the Cultists our heroes will be facing through the season, including elaborate early design possibilities that weren’t used, with Ahn explaining how they purposely simplified their initial designs so there was something to build up from. There’s also the Gloomstalkers, which Anh said he was relieved — from a production hurdle level — weren’t more full dragons, even though it still gave them plenty of challenges, as they’ll appear in different iterations. Loftis said they ultimately leaned toward a more alien-type look, because they come from “a different realm, the shadow realm.”

The Legend of Vox Machina also introduces its version of the Kraken this season, another character that went through many variations. Anh laughed about a meeting where he kept thinking he had a handle on how big they wanted this creature to be, only to be told “no, bigger” repeatedly.

And this season will bring in The Cobalt Soul’s formidable vault guardians, which Anh described as “a fantastic security system.” They also spoke about how the vault itself was a challenge because they were putting “a ton of action in here and wanted it to make it feel like an enormous space.”

Attendees were then shown both the animatic version, followed by the finished version of a scene in which Grog takes on one of the vault guardians in battle – a multi-armed, spider-like female, who very much has the upper hand as she smashes Grog into various surfaces. As Ahn joked, the scene was “Just Grog getting his ass kicked!”

The first three episodes of The Legend of Vox Machina Season 4 are streaming now on Prime Video with additional episodes arriving in three episode batches every Wednesday.

Be sure to keep up with everything going on at IGN Live 2026. You can check the full schedule to see what else is coming up across games, movies, TV, streaming, and more.
