Young Sheldon Star Annie Potts Says She Was a ‘Little Sad’ About Jim Parsons Cameo in Show’s Finale

Annie Potts, who portrayed a younger version of Sheldon’s Meemaw on Young Sheldon, revealed how she felt about the show’s finale, disagreeing with how adult Sheldon remained “mean and unchanged” in Parsons’ finale cameo.

The end of Young Sheldon — the seven-season-long Big Bang Theory Spinoff show — was rife with drama. Its abrupt ending was reportedly revealed to cast members in a Zoom call, with Potts saying she felt “blindsided” by the decision and went “full Meemaw” on the series’ producers.

She elaborated on these feelings in a book authored by Jessica Radloff titled Young Sheldon: The (Juicier-Than-Meemaw’s-Brisket) Inside Story of the Hit Comedy, where she described her reaction to Jim Parson’s cameo at the end of the final episode as a grown-up Sheldon.

According to Radloff’s book, Potts was “a little sad” about how Sheldon remained “mean and unchanged” as a character despite all the events of the prequel series.

“That broke my heart,” she told the author. “It was like, ‘Really? Still no responsibility?’ It was just selfishness. It’s just not how I wish to see Sheldon off into the world. …I thought the show could have ended [with young Sheldon] and not to the dreaded scene with Jim and Mayim as Sheldon and Amy revealing he was unchanged and unrepentant. That gave me a stomachache. It was like, ‘Who crashed our party?! Who invited you?’”

While most of the cast reportedly felt similarly burnt by the situation, Young Sheldon himself, Iain Armitage, said he was probably the only member who was actually happy that the show was finally over.

“Looking back now, it’s nostalgic-sad,” he said. “Like, I miss working at Warner Bros., I miss the crew and the people I love. I love the act of acting. I love doing it. It’s fun. But not really specific moments. More the overall thing.”

He went on to call the intense reaction to the show’s cancellation from his fellow castmates as “heavy and annoying and weird,” saying he wanted to be back in Virginia.

“I wanted to be traveling, and I’m happy to do whatever movie comes up. And my mom has always imbued me with a very healthy sense of ephemerality, and the fact that nothing good can last and everything changes, and that’s a good thing,” he continued. “I would hate to be on a show playing 23-year-old Sheldon. That would suck. I wouldn’t want to do that. So it was a perfect time to end it,” he said in the book.

A Young Sheldon spinoff series was greenlit (news that, reportedly, also blindsided the original show’s cast), focusing on Georgie and Mandy as young parents in the 90s. It was first announced in 2024 and is still running today, currently on its third season.
