Brand New Day Trailer References Tobey Maguire, and Shows Tom Holland’s Wrists Shooting Webs

A new Spider-Man: Brand New Day TV Spot has shown a close-up look at Tom Holland’s wrists squirting organic webbing for the first time — and includes a fun reference to Tobey Maguire.

The latest release of new Spider-Man movie footage offers a slightly extended version of a scene we’ve already glimpsed in trailers, where Peter discusses his mutating DNA with Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner. We also see Peter discovering he can now fire off white sticky goo from his wrists in surprising detail — and we see it ooze through his clothing.

“Organic webs,” Parker says. “Peter 2 had them, he was cool, you’re cool.”

Of course, “Peter 2” here is a reference to Tobey Maguire’s legendary incarnation of Spider-Man, who popped into the MCU and met Tom Holland’s webslinger during the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home. (Alongside Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man, the trio nicknamed themselves Peter 1, 2, and 3.) Clearly, Holland’s hero still remembers his Spidey brethren, and the ability to fire organic webbing rather than artificial goo from a canister.

Alas, it looks like the MCU’s Peter will take some time to adjust to his body’s newfound capabilities — we next see him trying to leap across to a building, only for him to smash through a water tower and gatecrash a wedding. Watch the TV spot below:

Happily, Peter appears to have mastered his webbing by the end of the movie, as the trailer’s money shot comes in a cool-looking sequence where Peter floods a whole room with web to trap half a dozen members of ninja monk clan The Hand, in a silky trap that Shelob would be proud of.

With a month to go until Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s July 31 release in theaters, the summer blockbuster’s promotional campaign is now in full swing. Yesterday brought a World Cup-themed commercial featuring Lionel Messi meeting Spider-Man, while the film’s latest full trailer officially revealed the Hulk’s presence in the movie and further teased Sadie Sink’s mysterious role that looks increasingly to be an MCU version of Jean Grey.

Amid press and fan appearances, we’ve also had Holland trying his hardest not to spoil details of the MCU’s future — with mixed success. Holland flat-out revealed that one person still knew that Peter Parker was Spider-Man despite Doctor Strange’s spell. Asked if he was in Avengers: Doomsday or Secret Wars, Holland declined to answer though strongly hinted he was.
